“This Place Matters”

 Spencer Architectural Scavenger Hunt

MAY is Preservation Month! Every year the National Trust for Historic Preservation identifies a theme for Preservation Month and the theme this year is, “This Place Matters.” This place, that many of us call home, is Spencer.  Spencer has a Cultural District which has the largest collection of Art Deco architecture.  It also has a Historic District and many other significant historic and cultural resources.  Preservation Month is the time to educate ourselves about these architectural resources. You don’t have to travel to Italy or New York City to find important architectural elements. Architecture is all around us! Architecture tells us stories about those who came before us and will tell the stories long after we are gone.

To celebrate Preservation Month there is going to be a “This Place Matters” Scavenger Hunt.  You don’t have to live in Spencer or even Clay County, the only requirement is that you are between the ages of 5-100+.  Prizes will be awarded for three places in each age group; 5-12, 13-18, and 19-100+.   To pick up a registration form and rules visit any of these places; Spencer City Hall, Spencer Community Theatre, Spencer Main Street, Iowa Lakes RC&D, Community Bank, the Spencer Public Library, or www.iowalakesrcd.org

For more information or questions contact Sheriffa Jones at 712-262-2083.

ALL registration forms and pictures must be received by June 2, 2008 at the Iowa Lakes RC&D Office.
