Iowa Lakes RC&D Intern

Spencer, IA After a long year of early mornings and late nights most college students look forward to their summer vacation. But, what do the majority of college students do on their vacation? Is there appeal for them to return to their home town, or are most just happy to leave home?

Brittney Jepsen is one student who left her hometown for college, but could not wait to return. She has just finished her first year at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. She is double majoring in Corporate Communications and Marketing with a minor in Management. Not yet ready to stay away from her home town of Terril, Brittney has decided to come home for the summer and is interning for Iowa Lakes RC&D. This summer she will be working primarily with Sheriffa Jones, an Architectural Historian, on press releases, website design, educational programs, and two county reconnaissance surveys.  While interning she will also be working at the Spencer Golf and Country Club.

The first year of college may seem scary for some people, but Brittney was not afraid to jump in. During her first year she was involved in a number of organizations and found time to volunteer. With-in the first month of arriving at Simpson she pledged to a sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and a month after that was serving on the Standards Committee. She also became active in Public Relations Student Society of America.

Brittney volunteered at Lutheran Youth Services helping refugees learn and adapt to the American culture.  Another on-campus volunteer opportunity Brittney took advantage of was Up ‘till Dawn, which is associated with St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Still with all these activities at College Brittney enjoys being involved in the Spencer Community. She grew up being involved with the Clay County 4-H program and plans on giving back to the community what she received. She plans on continuing to be a member of the Clay County 4-H Horse Council and volunteering at the Extension Office during preparations for fair time. Brittney thinks it is important to remember where you came from!
