Cemetery Preservation
Steuck Prairie Land Cemetery
June 21, 2008 from 8 a.m.-11 a.m.
Join us when you can, for as long as you can!!
Get out from under your umbrella and rain jacket and join us for a day of learning about native prairie flowers and grasses; family history; and cemetery preservation!! Many of you have been waiting and waiting for a nice summer day! Well, hopefully the first day of summer will bring us sunshine and a great day to beautify the Steuck Prairie Land Cemetery!
This workshop will be held
at the Steuck Prairie Land Cemetery outside of Hartley, IA. This is a Saturday
activity that the whole family can enjoy.
DIRECTIONS: Steuck Prairie Land Cemetery-3616 Tanager Avenue
From the North–from Hartley, go south on black top M12 for 4 miles, then turn right (west) onto black top B24-go west for three miles, turn left (south) onto Tanager Avenue, which is a gravel road. Travel about ˝ mile on Tanager, the cemetery is located on the east side of the gravel road and there is a green address marker for 3616.
From the South-from Primghar go 4 miles east on black top B40 turn left (north) onto Tanager Avenue which is a gravel/dirt road, go about 2 ˝ miles north to 3616 Tanager Avenue. The cemetery is on the east side of the road.
Agenda: The day will begin with a brief talk about the family that settled the area; then DNR personnel will give a short presentation about the prairie plants in the area; and will round out with the beautification project and children activities. The beautification project will include; trimming a few trees, trimming around headstones and family plots, and removing non-native plants. The children activities will include; mapping the headstones and conducting headstone chalk rubbings.
Bring: Water, Sunscreen, Work Gloves, Work Clothes, Blanket, and Tools.
